A judge in Belgium has given six month suspended jail terms to a mother and father who are suspected of killing their baby boy unintentionally.
Both parents were found guilty of the death of their baby boy, Lucas who weighed just 9.5lb when he died at just 7 months of age.
Lucas died on they way to hospital in 2014 after being fed a diet of vegan, vegetable milk.
The parents, from Beveren near Antwerp, ran a health food shop and fed him for four months with milk made from oats, buckwheat, rice and quinoa.
Dehydrated and malnourished, a homeopathic doctor advised the couple to call an ambulance.
Lucas died on the way to hospital and at the time of his death, his organs had shrunk to half their normal size.
An autopsy revealed that lucas’ stomach was empty and he was severely dehydrated.
The couple admit to resorting to Vegetable Milk as Lucas was refusing infant formula and believed he was lactose- or gluten-intolerant despite never been confirmed by a doctor.
It was alleged by prosecutors that the couple had travelled across Belgium to see a homeopathic specialist and that Lucas had never seen a social worker or doctor.
However, the child’s mother testified, “Sometimes he gained a little weight, sometimes he lost a little. We never wished for the death of our son,” while his father stated “We never went with Lucas to a doctor because we never noticed anything unusual.”
Babies should be fed with breastmilk or cow’s milk-based infant formulas in their first year. Supplements are also often required in order to provide vital calcium and iron for children who cannot tolerate cow’s milk-based products.
